Red Force squander Day 2 advantage

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago Red Force produced a sterling fightback to limit Barbados Pride but then suffered a batting meltdown, to concede the advantage on the second day of their sixth round match here Saturday.

The visitors managed to bowl Barbados out for 275 after the hosts resumed on an ominous 246 for four, with leg-spinner Imran Khan snaring four for 65 and fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, three for 40.

Red Force then squandered a position of 68 for one to be dismissed for 218, with opener Evin Lewis top scoring with 43, captain Jason Mohammed getting 32 and Jeremy Solozano, 30.

They were undermined by impressive seamer Carlos Brathwaite who picked up four for 65 and off-spinner Roston Chase, who finished with three for 14.

Batting a second time with a lead of 57 runs, Barbados were 15 without loss from the three overs available before the close at Kensington Oval – an overall lead of 72 heading into Sunday’s penultimate day.

Red Force produced a valiant performance in the morning session to claim the last six Barbados wickets for just 29 runs, to end the innings just over half-hour before lunch.

Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich added just nine runs to his overnight 83 while Chase, unbeaten on 85 at the start, failed to add.

Chase fell in the day’s third over, caught at the wicket by a diving Stephen Katwaroo off Gabriel with just four runs added, and Carlos Brathwaite was taken in the deep soon after for four, swinging at the same bowler.

Dowrich, eyeing his third first class hundred, then played onto pacer Marlon Richards, as the slide continued for Barbados Pride.

When Red Force batted, Lewis and Imran Khan (5) posted 31 for the first wicket, as they went to lunch at 26 without loss.

After the break, Imran Khan was well caught at point by Jomel Warrican off speedster Miguel Cummins, paving the way for Lewis and Yannick Ottley (6) to add a further 37 for the second wicket.

Lewis and Ottley fell in successive overs from Carlos Brathwaite to leave Red Force on 70 for three, and Mohammed then anchored two crucial stands to keep his side afloat.

He put on 32 for the fourth wicket with Yannick Cariah (17) and 48 for the next wicket with Solozano, to push T&T up to 150 for four at one stage, 45 minutes after tea.

However, once Solozano edged Carlos Brathwaite to Ashley Nurse at slip, the innings went into terminal decline and T&T lost their last six wickets for 68 runs.

Ramdin sees big job front, behind stumps

WICB Media Release.

NELSON, New Zealand – West Indies wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin says the men from the Caribbean are ready for their first assignment in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

The Windies start their Pool B campaign against Ireland on Monday at Saxton Oval.

First ball is 11 am (6pm Sunday Eastern Caribbean Time/5pm Sunday Jamaica Time).

The experienced 28-year-old made his World Cup debut in 2007 but missed the 2011 event. He has played 120 matches and has made 1,804 runs. He is the only Windies keeper in history to make an ODI century and last year hit two centuries – 169 against Bangladesh in St Kitts and 128 against England in Antigua. He made a match-winning half-century in the last warm-up victory over Scotland and said he also enjoying his glovework behind the stumps.

Ramdin spoke to reporters after the West Indies training session. Please see details below:

About the spirit in the team: The spirit has been good so far, as you can see the guys all have smiles on their faces, we are enjoying the sunshine here in nelson and we are enjoying each others’ company. Looking ahead, I just think we need to get some partnerships at the top of the order and get things going. All the guys have been putting in a lot of hard work we are very excited as well to get it started, and try and get another win under our belts as quickly as possible, and get this tournament kick started.

About Ireland: We know the Irish. They have a very disciplined bowling line up, they have some good batsman in there as well so we won’t take them lightly. It is very important that we go out and play good positive cricket and try to beat them in all departments and come up trumps.

About his role in the team: My role in the middle order is very important, I have to try and bat as many overs as possible and give the power hitters – Sammy, Russell and those guys – the chance to come in and strike the ball and give our bowlers something to defend. It is a big occasion, the World Cups are very exciting and everyone wants do their utmost for the team. It’s not always about that big magical moment, but often about doing the little bits and pieces to see the team over the line. Every moment matters...every match matters.

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Playing for MYO against Valiants in a T/20 match of the season championship level in Trinidad over the weekend, Guyanese Frederick Pestano smashed nine fours and five sixes in an unbeaten 93 but could not prevent his team from a thrilling two-run defeat.

Valiants batted first and made 151- 3 in the game which was reduced to 14 overs due to slow over rate.  St Lucian Mervin Wells led the way with 72 as Pestano had 1-30 from three overs, Gabriel Blackwell (1-39) and Shyan Moowah (1-41 from four overs).

In reply MYO made 149-3 but despite Pestano’s blitz and 19 from Nicholas Ramdass, their team fell to short. Needing 13 off the last over they could only manage 11 even thought a controversial Umpiring decision which ruled a four off the last ball when it was felt that it had cleared the boundary dashing their victory hopes.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Rookie Shai Hope finally delivered on his immense promise, stroking his maiden regional first class hundred to put Barbados Pride in a strong position to beat Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in their sixth round WICB Professional Cricket League contest.

The right-handed Hope finished unbeaten on 111, an innings that propelled the hosts to 278 for five declared, on the third day at Kensington Oval here Sunday.

Carlos Brathwaite smashed an entertaining unbeaten 59, Roston Chase got 46 while Kirk Edwards scored 24.

Leg-spinner Imran Khan picked up two for 64.

At the close, Red Force were 17 without loss in pursuit of 336 for victory, with Monday’s final day looming.

Resuming at their overnight 15 without loss, Barbados slumped to 57 for three in the second hour.

Kyle Corbin failed to add to his overnight four, bowled off stump by fast bowler Shannon Gabriel at 17 for one in the day’s fourth over.

In the next over with no runs added, captain Kraigg Brathwate was taken behind driving at seamer Marlon Richards for seven and Kirk Edwards’ run of poor form continued when he was stumped off Imran Khan at 57 for three.

Hope then came to his side’s rescue in an innings that spanned a shade under five hours, lasted 221 balls and included eight fours and two sixes.

He shared two three significant partnerships that hurt Red Force. He added 88 for the fourth wicket with Chase who hit four fours and a six off 97 balls in nearly two hours at the crease and the put on a further 45 for the next wicket with Shane Dowrich who made 19.

However, it was the 88-run, unbroken sixth wicket stand between Hope and the aggressive Brathwaite that deflated Red Force.

Brathwaite faced just 61 balls, crunching three fours and five sixes, to dominate the partnership.

He reached his fifth first class half century with two successive sixes.

300 to 349 runs – 3 points

350 to 399 runs – 4 points

400 runs or over – 5 points

A maximum of three bowling points will be awarded based on wickets taken by each team as follows:

3 to 5 wickets taken – 1 point

6 to 8 wickets taken – 2 points

9 to 10 wickets taken – 3 points

For the avoidance of doubt, “wickets taken” shall relate exclusively to batsmen dismissed under Laws 30 to 39 inclusive and to batsmen retired out.

If penalty runs are awarded to a team which at that time had faced less than 110 overs in their first innings, or completed their first innings before they had faced 110 overs, those penalty runs will be considered as counting towards the total as far as the award of bonus points is concerned.

If penalty runs are awarded to a team which had already faced 110 overs or more in their first innings, or had previously completed their first innings after they had faced 110 overs, those penalty runs will not be considered as counting towards the total as far as the award of bonus points is concerned.

Emrit healthy to face Jamaica

Trinidad Guardian article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Rayad Emrit has recovered from a hamstring injury and will lead T&T against Jamaica in the seventh round of the West Indies Cricket Board Professional League, which bowls off tomorrow at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

Emrit replaces Jeremy Solozano in the T&T squad, which will be playing its third match on the trot away from home. The T&T cricketers will be hoping to rebound from the sound thrashing they received against Barbados last weekend, when it lost by 222 runs.

T&T has struggled throughout the tournament and is in fifth position on the six-team standings, only ahead of the Leeward Islands. T&T has only won one match for the season which came against the Leewards.

T&T executive member Lalman Kowlessar is not certain Emrit will make a difference on the struggling team.

He said: “I am not sure he will change a lot, the players themselves have to make changes. With the skipper coming back hopefully there will be some incentive to do better.”

T&T is missing many of its senior players due to West Indian duty and personal reasons such as Darren Bravo, Sunil Narine and Ravi Rampaul but Kowlessar believes the young T&T team should be performing at a higher level.

“I did not expect them to win, but I expected a better account of themselves, we should be doing better.”

The team’s overall showing in the competition concerns Kowlessar especially in the batting department, but believes the bowlers are also below par.

TTCB to meet Logie over 4-Day woes

Trinidad & Tobago Newsday article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - The Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) executive committee is expected to meet with TT Red Force coach Augustine “Gus” Logie to discuss the struggles of the national team at the current West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League Regional Four Day Tournament.

The Red Force recently suffered heavy defeats away to the Windward Islands Volcanoes and the Barbados Pride, following home losses to the Jamaica Franchise and the Guyana Jaguars during the 2014-2015 season.

Patrick Rampersad, third vice-president of the TTCB, said in a telephone interview yesterday, “the thing is we haven’t had a formal meeting with him in the last few weeks. We had a meeting with him prior to the commencement of the (Four Day) Tournament. We were all on the same page as to what we want to achieve and all those things.”

Rampersad continued, “but the last few weeks, he has been on the road. We haven’t had discussions with him, at least the TTCB hasn’t had a formal meeting in terms of discussing the coach per se. But I’m sure it will come up sooner or later, the discussion of the performance of the Trinidad and Tobago team, particularly in the longer version.

“In fact, it’s something that occupies our minds all the time, and especially where you don’t have the best team available to you all the time,” he added. “What is worrisome is that we’re not seeing the replacements doing as well as they should do.”

Concerning the lack of replacements, the president of the Merry Boys Cricket Club stated, “we have gone into a new structure in the domestic competition, from two days to three days, playing 90 overs a day. And that’s precisely why we went that way because what we have noticed, in the two-day game, we’re playing 210 overs.

“The better sides played (the games) like a limited-overs game, to get bonus points for batting,” he added. “We have restructured the local domestic cricket primarily to move in a direction where we’ll give batsmen the opportunity to bat and build long innings.”

Admitting that “the technical staff have been meeting and trying to deal with the issues,” Rampersad pointed out, “what has happened to Gus is he has inherited (those problems) and it will take some time to deal with it. And it has to be a collaborative effort between the national coach and the domestic competitions and so on.

“My own view is that it will take some time to develop. It has to start from the primary and secondary school (levels). We have to get changes in formatting those competitions because they’re playing limited overs cricket.”

Rampersad stressed, “my own view is that there should be a professional Premiership in Trinidad and Tobago funded by the Government because clubs can’t afford that. We can probably get a state enterprise for each one of these (10) clubs, where the players would be paid and they don’t have to look for jobs.

“They’re living the life of a professional cricketer. And you have proper technical staff and proper facilities attached to each club. That’s the only way we’ll go forward,” he ended.

WICB PCL Regional 4-Day Round 7 bulletin

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – One of the oldest rivalries in Caribbean sport will take centre stage, when reigning champions and second-placed Barbados Pride host front-runners Guyana Jaguars in the key match of the seventh round in the WICB Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament, starting on Friday at Kensington Oval.

Matches between the two sides date back to 1865 and have produced some of the most intriguing battles in the regional first-class game – and similar can be expected from this contest, since the outcome could have a heavy bearing on the destination of the Headley/Weekes Trophy of supremacy.

The two sides will keep a very close eye on developments at the Beausejour Cricket Ground which the struggling Leeward Islands Hurricanes will use as their home venue against regular home team and third-placed Windward Islands Volcanoes.

The other contest in the round brings together two teams that promised much before the season, but have lacked consistency, when Jamaica Franchise host Trinidad & Tobago Red Force at Sabina Park.

In Bridgetown, Barbados: The objective to win is the same for the Pride and the Jaguars – but there are extra-special reasons for both sides.

The Pride currently trail the Jags by 15 points and will want to either eliminate the gap or cut the deficit substantially in their bid to regain the title.

With such a healthy lead, the visitors want to put themselves out of reach of the rest of the competition including their hosts, as they make a push for their first R4Day title in 17 years.

Recent history favours the Pride – they have won three of the last four matches between the two sides – including their third round contest last November, when the Jaguars, chasing 69 for victory, were dismissed for 66.

This result will stick in the throat of the Jaguars and will be extra motivation, along with the knowledge that Ryan Hinds and Dwayne Smith, two of the main actors for the Pride in that match, will play no part, as well as their previous R4Day victory over the Pride came three years ago at the venue for this weekend’s encounter.

Both squads are unchanged.

In Gros-Islet, St. Lucia: The Hurricanes will hope they have a number of beautiful days, as the name of the ground suggests, as they fight to avoid their seventh straight defeat this season.

The Volcanoes, on the other hand, have hit a purple patch and have now become the side to watch and will be looking for their third straight victory in an effort to keep the pressure up under the two front-runners.

Results between the two sides have been pretty much even in their last nine matches, but the Volcanoes on form and their crushing nine-wicket victory in the third round last November in Grenada have the edge and will want a similar outcome.

The Volcanoes squad is unchanged, but the Hurricanes have brought Yannick Leonard, Steve Liburd and Lyndell Richardson in to replace Colin Hamer, Montcin Hodge and Hayden Walsh Jr in a bid to jump-start their batting.

In Kingston, Jamaica: The Franchisers and the Red Force will be locked in a battle to re-ignite their season.

When they met earlier in the season, the Red Force were second-placed and the Franchisers were third – but they have both fallen on hard times and will be looking to recapture the early momentum.

The hosts have typically dominated this fixture in the last 15 years, including a 37-run victory on the road in the third round – but the visitors can take comfort that they toppled the Franchisers when the two sides previously met two years ago at Sabina Park.

Both sides will be looking for their batting to click, following feeble performances last weekend with the Franchisers bringing opener Shacaya Thomas and uncapped Cassius Burton in to replace Nkrumah Bonner and veteran wicketkeeper/batsman Carlton Baugh Jr, while the Red Force have turned to recovering regular captain Rayad Emrit for injured left-hander Jeremy Solozano.

Franchise, Red Force in battle of struggling former champs

Jamaica Observer article.

Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaica Franchise and Trinidad & Tobago Red Force will lock horns in the Professional Cricket League, starting today at Sabina Park in what could be a fascinating contest between the two struggling former regional champions.

Play in the four-day encounter is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am.

The Jamaicans, just two rounds ago were trailing leaders Guyana Jaguars by only seven points, but losses to the Jaguars in Kingston and then to Windward Islands Volcanoes in St Vincent have left them in fourth spot in the six-team points standings with 57.

Junior Bennett, Jamaica's head coach, has been severely let down by the top-order batsmen. Their poor form has usually left the middle- and lower-order batting with plenty to do, and the team has failed to reach 250 runs in an innings this season.

Upon the team's return to the island on Wednesday, Bennett told the Jamaica Observer that they are desperate to bounce back from the consecutive defeats.

"We definitely have to bounce back in that game there, but our batting has to improve. There is absolutely no way we can continue to bat like this and expect to get good results," said the Jamaican coach.

Trinidad & Tobago's campaign so far has been even worse, with them going down four times in their six matches. They are fifth with 30 points.

Roland Sampath, Trinidad & Tobago manager, expressed hope that their fortunes could change against their major rivals.

"Yes, we are struggling in the tournament. We are coming off losses against the Windwards and then against Barbados (Pride), and we are looking for a better result against Jamaica," he told the Observer yesterday.

Jamaica have made two changes to the squad which travelled to St Vincent last week.

Veteran wicketkeeper/batsman Carlton Baugh, who has endured a torrid time with the bat of late, and struggling opening batsman Nkrumah Bonner have been omitted to make room for wrist-spinning all-rounder Cassius Burton and opener Shacaya Thomas.

Horace Miller, known more for his batting, is expected to take the wicketkeeping gloves for Jamaica.

For Trinidad & Tobago, batsman Jeremy Solozano misses out due to injury and is replaced by all-rounder Rayad Emrit.

In other matches starting today, front-runners Guyana (92 points) face second-placed hosts Barbados (77 points) in Bridgetown, and third-placed Windward Islands (64 points) clash with last-placed neighbours Leeward Islands Hurricanes (14 points) in St Lucia.

Squads:

Jamaica -- Tamar Lambert, John Campbell, Brandon King, Jermaine Blackwood, Dave Bernard, Horace Miller, Jason Dawes, Damion Jacobs, Marquino Mindley, Odean Brown, Cassius Burton, Shacaya Thomas, Gavon Brown.

Trinidad & Tobago -- Rayad Emrit, Jason Mohammed, Yannic Cariah, Derone Davis, Shannon Gabriel, Akeal Hosein, Steven Katwaroo, Imran Khan, Evin Lewis, Kjorn Ottley, Yannick Ottley, Marlon Richards, Daniel St Clair.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jason Mohammed stroked his eighth first class half-century to lead a Trinidad and Tobago Red Force fightback against Jamaica Franchise, on the opening day of their WICB PCL seventh round encounter here Friday.

Sent in at Sabina Park, Red Force were slumping at 65 for four when Mohammed arrived to turn around the innings with a knock of 62, and propel the visitors to 277 all out.

Yannick Ottley and Akeal Hosein supported him with 39 apiece while Kjorn Ottley got 35 and wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo chipped in with 27.

Leg-spinner Damion Jacobs picked up four for 70 while fast bowler Jason Dawes (2-46) and leg-spinner Odean Brown (2-69) both finished with two wickets.

At the close, Jamaica lost Horace Miller for four to be 12 for one in reply, still 265 runs behind on first innings.

Red Force were in trouble as early as the third over of the day with just two runs on the board when Evin Lewis fell without scoring off the third ball he faced.

Left-arm seamer Gavin Brown then knocked over Imran Khan, lbw for 13, to leave Red Force on 20 for two.

Ottley, who struck six fours and a six off 62 balls, added 45 with Yannic Cariah, before both fell in success overs to leave T&T tottering on 83 for four at lunch.

Mohammed then anchored two partnerships to push T&T through the afternoon session, adding 84 with Ottley for the fifth wicket before putting on another 49 for the sixth with Katwaroo.

Mohammed struck seven fours and two sixes off 117 balls in 3-3/4 hours at the crease before being seventh out with the score on 203.

Four quick wickets tumbled for 37 runs to leave Red Force on 235 for nine but Hosein smashed four fours and two sixes in a breezy 54-ball knock to add 42 for the last wicket with Marlon Richards (17).

WICB Media Release.

Christchurch, New Zealand - West Indies left-hander Darren Bravo will stay with the West Indies' team despite sustaining a torn hamstring during the ICC Cricket World Cup Group B 150-run win over Pakistan at Hagley Oval on Saturday.

West Indies media manager Philip Spooner told reporters Bravo had been taken to hospital for an MRI scan after retiring hurt during West Indies' innings. He said the injury had been diagnosed as a lower-grade tear.

"He has not been ruled out, he remains with the team," Spooner said, but added however, that Bravo was "highly unlikely" to play in Tuesday's match against Zimbabwe in Canberra.

St Mary’s win T20 clash at SE Zone opening

TTCB Media Release.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - St Mary's Superstars defeated Renown in an entertaining T20 match when the South East Zone of the T&T Cricket Board officially bowled off their 2015 season at the Sancho Branch Recreational Ground in Tableland.

The Moruga team, third-placed last season in the Senior Division beat runners-up Renown SC by four wickets and 13 balls to spare, witnessed by a large crowd of supporters on Friday night under floodlights.

Chairman of the South East Zone, Kelvin Mohammed, said that the grand opening of the zone’s season augers well for the future. He said the zone will again be sponsored by Ashmead Ali General Contracting Services and will feature 24 teams.

Overall winners last season, Barrackpore United Sports Club, was promoted to the Championship Division and he said much was expected from them as they continue to improve and stake their claim at a higher level of competition.

Mohammed relayed the regrets of the zone’s sponsor for not being present at the auspicious occasion because he was at another cricket launch but sent his best regards and expectation of a safe, successful and enjoyable season.

Present however were chairman of the Mayaro Rio Claro Regional Corporation, Hazaree Ramdeen and councillor Latchmi Narine Ramdhan, local government representative for  the St Julien/Princes Town electoral district.

Mohammed pointed out that the South East Zone of the T&TCB covers the largest geographic zone in the country with hosting matches in four regional corporations –-- Mayaro Rio Claro, PTRC, Penal Debe and Couva Talparo who are responsible for the playgrounds on which competitions are staged.

He said that co-ordinating efforts with the respective regional authorities has been a major challenge in getting the facilities ready in time so that the 2015 season could proceed inhindered. Also expected at the opening was MP for Princes Town, Neela Khan, who was also unavoidably absent because she was attending to government business in Parliament at the time.

Councillor for the area, Gowrie Roopnarine, did not show up  saying he had a previous engagement. The councillor has been at odds with the zone officials concerning the effort required to rehabilitate the ground and accommodate cricket teams using the facility.

Feature speaker was Azim Bassarath, president of the T&T Cricket Board who emphasised the importance of granting a stipend for cricket development from the Ministry of Sports directly to all 194 clubs engaged in T&TCB competitions.

Bassarath asked officials of the PTRC, through councillor Ramdhan, to rethink the idea of placing “dead sand” on the district’s recreation grounds. He commented that this was recently done at the Sancho Branch Road facility which he described as “the worst he has ever seen.”

After the formal part of the opening, cricket fans and supporters were treated to a competitive encounter between the zone’s top teams with music entertainment and the use of a digital scoreboard.

Mohammed said the South East Zone competitions will get underway in earnest with the 40-Overs matches on Saturday; and the three-day league fixtures slated for Sunday, and the following Saturday and Sunday.

He said the zone’s T20 competition will be contested on Tuesdays and Wednesdays under lights from 6 pm at four venues, namely the Biche Recreation Ground; Cumuto Recreation Ground in Barrackpore; Cedar Hill Recreation Ground; and Sancho Branch Road Recreation Ground.

Match Summary:

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Rookie Kjorn Ottley was closing in on his maiden first class hundred as Trinidad and Tobago Red Force dominated day two of their WICB PCL seventh round clash against Jamaica Franchise here Saturday.

At the close at Sabina Park, Red Force were 184 for four – an overall lead of 294 – with the left-handed Ottley unbeaten on 87.

The 25-year-old has so far carved out a high class innings, facing 126 balls in 130 minutes, and counting 13 fours and two sixes.

Speedster Marlon Richards had earlier put Red Force in command when he grabbed four for 42 as Jamaica crumbled for a paltry 167 in response to the visitors’ first innings of 277.

He was supported by pacer Daniel St Clair who had three for 21 and leg-spinner Imran Khan, who finished with two for 71.

Resuming the day on 12 for one, Jamaica slumped spectacularly to 86 for eight before they were rescued by Brandon King and Odean Brown, in a ninth wicket stand of 67.

King, on first class debut, top scored with a fine cameo innings of 71, hammering seven fours and six sixes, off 81 deliveries, while Odean Brown gave marvellous support with 44.

With a lead of 110 on first innings, Evin Lewis (21) and Imran Khan (20) gave T&T a sound start of 47 before both fell within the space of four balls in successive overs.

Kjorn Ottley then combined with Yannic Cariah (23) to revive the innings with a third wicket stand of 80, as they extended Red Force’s lead in the post-tea session.

Cariah had batted an hour when he fell lbw to leg-spinner Damion Jacobs and Jason Mohammed lasted 14 balls for his 11 before he too perished, to leave Red Force on 142 for four.

However, Ottley paired with his younger brother Yannick Ottley (8 not out) in a 42-run, unbroken fifth wicket stand, to ensure Red Force ended the day strongly.
