TTCB gets $250,000 for ‘good governance’

Trinidad Express article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Newly-appointed Minister of Sport Brent Sancho was full of praise for the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB), saying the cricketing governing body has “exemplified good governance” and as a reward received a cheque for $250,000.

Sancho said he met with TTCB president Azim Bassarath yesterday and was interested in mending the relationship between the two organisations.

Last year Bassarath claimed that no financial assistance had been forthcoming from the Sports Company for cricket development since 2011, and that it was owed funds which have severely hampered the organisation’s capability to administer its programmes.

“We had a long discussion today (yesterday) and I think it is the first time Mr Bassarath has left the Ministry smiling,” Sancho told the media following a press conference at the Ministry of Tourism when it was announced that T&T will be hosting seven matches in this year’s Caribbean Premier League, including the semi-finals and final.

“We have had a lot of acrimony in the past but I said to him we cannot right the wrongs of the past but we will work in partnership moving forward,” Sancho explained.

“We presented a cheque to Mr Bassarath for a $250,000 because I believe that the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board has exemplified good governance in sports in terms of what is required to get funding for various programmes,” he revealed.

“They have done the requirements that we need in the Ministry of Sport and we want to reward and show the other sporting bodies what good looks like.”

However, the Minister said he told the TTCB that the Ministry of Sport is not an ATM.

“We want value for money and they agreed to partner with us for some of our initiatives and programmes. We have camps for Easter and summer and we want to use our cricketing icons to be part of these camps and to be inspirational persons for our young children,” Sancho explained.

Trinidad Express article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Fatima College are enjoying an impressive unbeaten run in the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League Premier Division competition and will be looking to extend their winning streak today when they host last place Princes Town West Secondary at Fatima Ground in Mucurapo.

Fatima have won their previous three games and earned a “winning draw” in their first game of the season to climb to the top of the ten-team Premier Division standings with 70 points.

Their opponents are rooted to the bottom of the table with 14 points.

Second place Naparima Boys College have also been on a good run and are just seven points behind the leaders. Naps take on Carapichaima East Secondary today and will be hoping to capitalise on any slip-ups from Fatima.

Elsewhere, the defending champions Vishnu Boys’ Hindu College, who are currently third on 58 points, will have a tough battle on their hands when they host SSCL T20 champions Barrackpore West Secondary.

Barrackpore suffered their first major setback of the 2015 campaign last week when they fell to Fatima and they will be hoping to bounce back strong against the defending league champions who have a wealth of talent in their squad, including national youth players all-rounder Kirstan Kallicharan, pacer Jarlarnie Seales and spinner Bryan Boodram.

In the North Championship Division, leaders Manzanilla Secondary are on a bye which gives second place Barataria South a good opportunity to steal the top spot when they face Trinity College East in Trincity.

Both Trinity (35 points) and Barataria (37 points) are unbeaten in the competition and are only separated by two points.

In the South Championship, Fyzabad Secondary will also be trying to maintain their perfect run when they come up against Iere High School in Siparia.

Meanwhile South leaders Shiva Boys Hindu College will be confident of victory when they take on bottom side Preysal Secondary in Penal today.

All matches bowl off at 10 a.m.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - The Harvard Cricket Club, whose coaching clinic produced West Indies players Brian Lara and Ian Bishop, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Founded in 1965, the Club continues to be held in high esteem as being an organisation that has produced besides Lara and Bishop, Dwayne Bravo, and former national players Anil Balliram and Keno Mason.

The milestone was observed at the launch of the Digicel-sponsored Coaching Clinic on February 1.

The launch not only highlighted the Club’s 50 years of existence but also marked 10 years of Digicel’s partnership with Harvard for the Clinic, which is designed to support the growth of talented boys and girls in Trinidad and Tobago.

Digicel’s senior sponsorship manager, Christopher Edmond said, “To all the parents and guardians, please rest assured that your eager youngsters will be taught by some of this country’s finest coaches, with most of them being trained and certified by the Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board.”

Sampath disappointed with T&T batsmen

Trinidad & Tobago Newsday article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Manager of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force team Roland Sampath said he was extremely disappointed on Monday with the squad’s massive innings and 148-run defeat to the Windward Islands Volcanoes on the final day of their Fifth Round meeting in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League Four Day Tournament.

At the Beausejour Cricket Stadium, St Lucia yesterday, the Red Force resumed their second innings (following-on) on six without loss, after being skittled out for 177 in their first innings on Sunday — in response to the Volcanoes’ 400/8 declared.

But the Red Force batting, once again, crumbled under pressure as they folded for 75 in 32.1 overs.

Veteran bowlers Shane Shillingford (4/25) and Kenroy Peters (3/11) did the damage, with their off-spin and left-arm pace respectively.

In a telephone interview Sampath, while stating, “the discipline off the field is good,” noted, “it’s just performance-wise, we did not perform as we would have liked to, (making) 177 in the first innings.

“(Sunday) had overnight rains so the game (resumed) after 3 (pm). We were (six) overnight, thinking we would have had a better second innings performance but we just capitulated, we just crashed.”

Sampath admitted that the Volcanoes were excellent with the ball yesterday but “it was really two Test bowlers who bowled us out.”

He stated, “we should have applied ourselves better. Yes it’s some young players but still they’re representing Trinidad and Tobago. They have ability, they should have performed better.”

The batting has been the Red Force’s bugbear this 2014-2015 First Class season, as they have yet to cross 250 in any of their 10 innings so far.

“Our batting has been our problem,” Sampath acknowledged. “People need to go out there and play to their strengths, take their time and see if they can bat long. We can hope that the players learn quickly and perform. But to lose, and get bowled out for 75 is not nice. It’s disappointing.”

The Red Force will face Barbados Pride in their Sixth Round clash, at the Kensington Oval (from Friday until next Monday) and Sampath declared “it’s not going to get easier.”

Trinidad Express article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Minister of Sport Brent Sancho visited the Brian Lara Recreation Ground Wednesday in effort to understand the scope of construction being undertaken by the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago.

Accompanied by West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara, Minister Sancho viewed drawings and was updated by contractors on the progress at the Ground, which when completed will feature a 500-seat pavilion with change rooms and storage areas, car park, cricket nets, an outdoor basketball court and a children’s play park.

Brian Lara concurred with Minister Sancho about the facility’s potential to earn revenue with the installation of concession stands and advertising boards.

The Sport Minister is very keen on exploring income-generating opportunities for regional recreation grounds across the country, which will serve as a boost to the community’s business prospects as well as contribute to the country’s sport tourism product. Minister Sancho indicated that he was grateful to have input from Lara and is of the view that elite athletes should be consulted when facilities are being built, as their experiences of competing at international venues was invaluable to the development of the local sporting infrastructure.

As such, the former West Indies captain pointed out that in his view, the outfield and pitch at the Ground were of a high enough quality to permit warm-up, practice and training sessions for visiting regional and international teams as well as community level interventions for football and cricket.

The contractor on the project CG Construction estimated a 14-week timeline for completion of the ground.

With the season now halfway complete, the teams are now in the return leg of the Tournament and some will be looking to gain revenge on their opponents from the first leg of matches.

In North Sound, Antigua: Bottom-placed Leeward Islands Hurricanes will be hoping that home advantage will breed success for the first time this season, when they face chart-toppers Guyana Jaguars at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground.

This is definitely the tale of two extremes: The Hurricanes have failed to win a match this season, sinking to a heavy defeat against the Pride on the road in the previous round, when the Jaguars made a huge statement, gaining a significant boost of confidence with a solid victory over the Jamaica Franchise on the road.

So current form and recent history strongly favour the visitors, as the Jaguars, whose 13-member squad is unchanged, have won five of their previous 10 matches including in the first round of this season’s tournament.

The Hurricanes, whose side is also unchanged, can take comfort in the knowledge that the last time the two teams met at this venue early last year, they landed a five-wicket knock-out punch to the Jaguars.

In Bridgetown, Barbados: The Pride will be looking to collect their fourth straight victory and prove what a difference a format makes when they host long-standing arch-rivals Trinidad & Tobago Red Force at Kensington Oval.

Pride and Red Force were truly last season’s top two sides – the home team lifted the NAGICO Super50 title and followed up with the R4Day crown, while T&T finished in the runners-up spot in both competitions.

This season however, the Pride struggled in the NS50 which the full-strength Red Force won – and it has been vice versa in the R4Day with the embattled visitors find the going tough as their hosts have recovered strongly from weather setbacks early in the season.

Current form and recent history are also on the side of the Pride. They seemed destined to win their tournament opener against the Red Force, but the weather intervened and prevented them from clinching a sixth straight victory over this same opponent.

Both sides are unchanged from the previous round.

In Kingstown, St. Vincent: Judging on recent results, the most competitive contest of the round could emerge, when the Windward Islands Volcanoes meet the Jamaica Franchise at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex.

Volcanoes breathed life into their season with a resounding victory over the Red Force in the previous round, at the same time that the Franchisers stumbled when they were dominated by the Jaguars.

Both teams need all the points they could acquire to keep the two front-running sides within reach, so expect a keen affair.

This will be the first time the two sides will meet at Arnos Vale in 15 years, but recent history favours the visitors, since they have won nine of the 20 matches in the same period, including the first round encounter this season on home soil.

Windwards are unchanged, but the Franchisers are the only side this round to make an adjustment, bringing Brandon King in to replace Shacaya Thomas.

Barbados looking to extend T&T's woes

Trinidad Express article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Trinidad and Tobago Red Force can still salvage their abysmal Professional Cricket League four-day campaign but the odds are against them.

Without skipper Rayad Emrit, the youthful Red Force squad led by Jason Mohammed will be going up against one of the more consistent teams in the West Indies, defending champions Barbados Pride.

The match bowls off today at 10 a.m. at Kensington Oval where the Red Force have not recorded a four-day victory in over a decade.

Barbados have won the previous three first class matches against T&T at Kensington, the last two in 2013 and 2014, by an innings.

The Bajans have also whipped T&T in five of their previous six four-day encounters, the last of which was a rain-affected drawn game at Kensington Oval in November last year.

T&T are coming off an embarrassing innings and 148-run loss against the Windward Islands when they were dismissed for 177 and 75 and manager Roland Sampath said he expected them to do a lot better against the defending champions.

The only good news for T&T is the fact that Emrit will return to the team for the match against Jamaica at Sabina Park next week.

Meanwhile, Barbados romped to victory in a one-sided contest against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes last weekend but few of the Bajans were ever really challenged. The bowlers hardly broke a sweat as the home side rolled over the Hurricanes by an innings and 190 runs.

“The team is very mentally prepared. We take no opposition for granted nor leave room for complacency,” head coach Hendy Springer told the Barbados Nation newspaper on the eve of the match.

“Every team we play against have their strengths and weaknesses. We respect their strengths and look to exploit their weaknesses. All the players in our squad are working towards improving their game. Some are looking to regain their spots on the international side and some are working towards making their debut at that level, so there is always incentive to perform well,” Springer said.

Barbados, the only unbeaten side in the competition, sit in second position on 60 points, 15 behind leaders Guyana and a comfortable 34 ahead of T&T who have struggled in the absence of several of their key players and are one rung from the bottom on 26 points.

Slumping Red Force in Bajans den

Trinidad & Tobago Newsday article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Newly appointed manager of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, Roland Sampath, is optimistic that the Jason Mohammed-led outfit can bounce back from their horrific and historic loss against the Windward Islands earlier this week, when they lock horns with defending champions Barbados in today’s Professional Cricket League (PCL) Regional Four Day encounter which bowls off in Bridgetown from 9am.

Presently fifth in the standings, the Augustus Logie-coached TT are expected to face an uphill task against the second placed Bajans, who are hoping to capitalise on precious home advantage.

Speaking to Sampath yesterday, he admitted they were forced to lick their wounds after their last round thrashing, but have now realigned themselves and are eagerly anticipating today’s meeting.

He acknowledged though that conquering their opponents on foreign soil will be a challenge.

“After the bad loss to the Windward Islands, we are now going to face Barbados, who can be considered more than formidable opponents. It is definitely not going to be an easy game but the guys welcome the challenge and are ready for tomorrow’s (today) clash. The players are getting an opportunity now to display their ability out there. It’s not going to be easy but this is the task at hand and we are determined to get the best out of them.”

Today’s Red Force attack remains unchanged from their previous outing and will feature another youthful red, white and black. Ace national spinner, Imran Khan aka “Sharky” captured his 200th regional wicket against the Windwards and will be hoping to increase his tally this time around. However on Wednesday, Khan sustained a minor knock to his ankle but will return to the pitch today.

“We just finished practising and are presently preparing for a team meeting. What we are asking the players to do, however, is to go out there, keep the focus and try to perform at the best of their ability. That’s all they can do really. The guys are fit and ready. The mood is good but what’s most important is when they go out there,” added Sampath.

TT Red Force - Jason Mohammed (captain), Evin Lewis, Jeremy Solozano, Yannic Cariah, Khesan Ottley, Kjorn Ottley, Imran Khan, Akeal Hosein, Daniel St Clair, Steven Katwaroo, Shannon Gabriel, Marlon Richards, Deron Davis.

Barbados Pride — Tino Best, Carlos Brathwaite, Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Kyle Corbin, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich, Ryan Hinds, Shai Hope, Ashley Nurse, Omar Phillips, Dwayne Smith, Kevin Stoute, Jomel Warrican, Kenroy Williams.

Dowrich, Chase dominate T&T Red Force

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich extended his rich vein of form with another half-century as Barbados Pride emerged with the better of exchanges on the opening day of their clash with arch-rivals Trinidad and Tobago Red Force here Friday.

The right-hander finished the day unbeaten on 83 as Pride closed on 246 for four after they were sent in at Kensington Oval in good batting conditions, in their sixth round contest of the WICB Professional Cricket League.

Dowrich was joined by rookie Roston Chase who was unbeaten on 85, and the pair have so far put on 153 in an impressive unbroken fifth wicket stand.

They partnership was necessary after Barbados Pride slumped to 93 for four after lunch, when captain Kraigg Brathwaite was caught at the wicket for 40.

However, any initiative Red Force had was quickly taken away as Dowrich and Chase took charge for the hosts to steer them to a comfortable position.

Dowrich, who hit a career-best unbeaten 131 against Leeward Islands Hurricanes last week at the same venue, counted nine fours and a six in an innings spanning 170 balls in 3-1/2 hours.

Chase, meanwhile, struck ten fours in a knock that consumed 194 balls in just under 4-1/2 hours at the crease, to gather only his second first class half century.

Barbados, however, were in early trouble when they lost their first three wickets cheaply in the pre-lunch session.

Opener Kyle Corbin made his way safely to 22 off 35 balls with three fours and a six before he had his defence breached by Imran Khan and was bowled at 25 for one inside the first hour.

With just four runs added, Barbados Pride suffered another blow when out-of-favour West Indies batsman Kirk Edwards’ fell without scoring to extend his poor form.

The right-hander pushed forward to the sixth delivery he faced and edged a catch to Evin Lewis at slip, in Imran Khan’s next over.

And Red Force were on top when Shai Hope was deceived and bowled by left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein for 13, to leave Barbados 58 for three.

Brathwaite and Chase then combined in a 35-run stand for the fourth wicket to revive the hosts, and steer them to 70 for three at lunch.

Unbeaten on 29, Test batsman Brathwaite pushed on after the break before becoming the fourth wicket to fall inside the first half hour after lunch, caught behind as he pushed at a rising delivery from fast bowler Shannon Gabriel.

He hit three fours off 106 deliveries in 2-1/2 hours.

Imran Khan has been the best bowler with two for 65.

Wilson poised to straddle biggest stage

SYDNEY, Australia – Fairy tales often don’t come true but try telling that to Trinidadian international cricket umpire Joel Wilson. He will be the only West Indian match official to stand in the ICC Cricket World Cup which bowled off in Australia and New Zealand on Saturday.

The 48-year-old will stand in three matches in the preliminary round as he marks a personal milestone 20 years of umpiring. Fairy tales don’t get much better.

Wilson has described it as an absolute honour to be chosen among the game's elite to stand in the February 14 to March 29 tournament, undeniably cricket’s greatest showpiece.

“I’m humbled and honoured at the same time to be part of a team of officials that could be considered the best crop in the world at the moment. To be at this World Cup means a lot to me and to west Indian umpires in general,” Wilson told CMC Sports.

“I’m looking forward to my assignments in the tournament. This is, for me, something special and something I worked towards. I’ve been umpiring for 20 years and now after two decades I have been given the opportunity to stand participate in one of the biggest sporting events on Earth.”

“I won’t be worried too much about what is happening around, my job is to do my best in the middle and make the correct and best decisions. I have umpired to empty stadiums and I have umpired to full stadiums, so I have told myself to take it one step at a time, one ball at a time and I know I will enjoy the World Cup.”

Wilson’s first assignment was on Saturday’s opening day in the big contest between hosts Australia and England at the MCG in Melbourne where he acted as the fourth umpire.

His assignments in the middle will be in Canberra when Afghanistan clash with Bangladesh at Munaka Oval on February 18, in Brisbane when Zimbabwe face Pakistan at the Gabba on March 1, and in Tasmania when Sri Lanka take on Scotland on March 11.

Wilson will become the third West Indian to stand in the Cricket World Cup – the other two are legends of umpiring. Jamaican Steve Bucknor proved to be one of the best of all-time becoming the only man to stand in four World Cup finals.

He ended an illustrious career at the top of his game having completed a record 128 Test matches and 181 One-Day Internationals. Billy Doctrove of Dominica stood in the 2007 and 2011 World Cups and ended his career with 38 Test matches, 112 ODIs and 17 T20 Internationals.

Wilson is thrilled by the history he is also making for his country Trinidad and Tobago, and is determined to follow in the footsteps of Bucknor and Doctrove.

“I am the first Trinidadian umpire at the World Cup. We had Michael Ragoonath, who stood in the FIFA Football World Cup and is now a regional match referee in cricket, so I guess from a Trinidad perspective we have something to be proud of with our sporting officials,” Wilson said.

“I watched a lot Bucknor and Doctrove and they have offered me a lot of support. Steve Bucknor is an icon in umpiring and Billy Doctrove did extremely well in his career at the elite level. He (Doctrove) called me to wish me all the best before I left home and that meant a lot to me to get those words of encouragement from a man who knows how it is done at this level.”

Wilson acknowledged that at some stages in his career he felt like quitting but kind words of encouragement from Clyde Cumberbatch, a former international umpire, helped to strengthen his resolve.

“I remember the first day I stood in a match 20 years ago. After that first day I felt like giving up. I promised myself I would not go back,” he recounted.

“I was scheduled to be with a colleague who did not show up and I had to stand at both ends ... it was a school game and it was very taxing. That first day was a horror story, I didn’t get a breather, I didn’t have another umpire to talk to, it was a rough initiation, but it ended up being a good eye-opener now that I look back 20 years later.”

He continued: “Then we had classes at the Queen’s Park Oval and I was going to announce during the classes that I was finished with umpiring. Before the classes started, Mr Cumberbatch met me and said ‘I saw you at the weekend and your umpiring was really good’ and that motivated me.

“I didn’t announce my ‘retirement’ to the group,” he added with a laugh.

Wilson is the father of two daughters, one a law student and the other a high school student. He said that their support along with that of his wife and extended family, had been tremendous in his journey.

He also spoke of his close friendship with Gregory Brathwaite, a fellow international umpire.

“I have to thank my wife and family for all their support. My daughters are my biggest fans … I know this will sound unusual to think about it but they watch matches to cheer on the umpire,” he said with a smile.

“Gregory has been a friend for a while now and we discuss cricket and umpiring. There is so much happening in the field of umpiring and we always try to keep up to date with the latest happenings.”

Only four years ago, Wilson was making his international debut in a one-dayer between West Indies and India in Jamaica’s capital Kingston.

Now, 18 ODIs and 16 Twenty20 Internationals later, Wilson is commanding cricket’s biggest stage and continues to be driven by the desire to make a meaningful contribution to the glorious game.

“I never thought 20 years ago when I started that I would reach the World Cup stage. All I really wanted to do was give my best to the game of cricket,” Wilson said.

“It is a wonderful game and a rich part of West Indian history and who we are as a people and all I really wanted to do from the first day was just contribute in a meaningful and professional way to the game.

“My ultimate ambition is to stand in a Test match. I see Test cricket as the ultimate form of the game and I dream of making it all the way to that level.”
